When is a Dental Crown Needed?

You may have heard of a dental crown, but what is it used to treat? Dental crowns are a very versatile restorative and cosmetic treatment. They can be used to restore the health of a smile and its appearance.

Why do you need a dental crown?

Dental crowns can be used to correct several dental problems.

  • Protect a tooth weakened by decay or breakage
  • Hold together the parts of a cracked tooth to prevent cleaving
  • Rebuild worn teeth
  • Repair a decayed tooth when a tooth-colored filling is not sufficient to provide coverage and support
  • Support a dental bridge by being mounted onto healthy teeth on either side of a gap in the smile
  • Cover teeth that are misshapen and/or severely discolored to improve their appearance
  • Cover a dental implant to restore function

What is a dental crown made of?

Dental crowns can be made of tooth-colored ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or metal alloys. The material used will depend on the use of the crown, the location in the mouth, and how visible it will be when you smile or speak.

How is a crown placed?

The procedure for a dental crown usually requires two visits about two weeks apart. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared by having the damaged or decayed portion removed and shaped to make room for the crown. This means that part of the tooth may have to be shaved down. Impressions will be taken to be sent to a dental lab where the crown will be manufactured. In the meantime, a temporary crown will be placed on the tooth.

Once the permanent crown is completed, you will return to the dentist to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent one bonded to the tooth.

Care of a Dental Crown

Dental crowns require the same care as natural teeth: daily brushing and flossing, along with regular dental check-ups.
